OCOEE, Fla. - After five years of planning, the $400 million City Center near State Road 429 and State Road 408 in Ocoee is on its way.

City Center West Orange will be a mix of stores, condominiums, restaurants, hotel and office space.

“It’s like you are in downtown Orlando. It’s not downtown Ocoee, but it will become downtown Ocoee in the future hopefully one day,” said John Amm, the project’s senior vice president.

The complex will consist of 100 acres of lakeside property that faces West Colonial Drive near the junctions of SR 429, SR 408 and the Florida Turnpike.

Roads will be constructed over the next 8-9 months, then the structures will start to go up in June. The renderings show a grand plaza filled with shopping, restaurants and living space. There will be 390 condo units, a 122-room hotel and 200,000 feet of retail space.

Some of the space has already been bought.

Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson said the project will bring 6,000-7,000 new jobs and help the city with a few tax breaks. He also said it will boost morale for the sleepy town.

“I don’t mind going to Sand Lake Road to eat, but it’d be nice to have (somewhere) here in town where we can go shop and eat right in your backyard.” Johnson said.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to be complete sometime in 2019. The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Monday morning.
